Is BMW already working on the next-gen X1?

It was way back in 2022 when BMW unveiled the third-generation X1. Codenamed the U11, BMW's smallest crossover SUV made its way to the Philippine market in early 2023. It was then followed by the all-electric iX1, which made its local debut last year and was accompanied by the coupe-like iX2.

Since its launch several years ago, the third-generation BMW X1 has yet to receive any changes or updates. However, our spy photographers managed to take pictures of what could be the refreshed version, and it looks like it will be a heavy redesign.

Despite the heavy camouflage, the refreshed X1 will likely get the “Neue Klasse” look, which already debuted in the all-new iX3 EV. Immediately noticeable are the covered-up headlights, which appear to have been derived from the iX3. We can also see what appears to be the vertical grilles, albeit covered up to throw off our spies.

The rear will also likely get the same treatment with new full-width LED taillights, along with a revised tailgate. Also worth mentioning are the pop-up door handles, which are currently not present on the third-generation X1. This likely means we're looking at a heavily refreshed X1 or perhaps a new-generation model entirely.

According to our spies, the launch of the new BMW X1 is expected to happen in 2026 or in early 2027. Since the third-generation X1 is only three years old, perhaps the camouflage BMW our spies saw could be a prototype of the next-generation crossover. On the flip side, BMW could also introduce a major refresh for the current X1.

With BMW looking to refresh or make new-generation versions of up to 40 nameplates, BMW is not resting on its laurels.
