Lamborghini cites low demand for an electric Raging Bull
The development of Ferrari’s first-ever electric vehicle is well on its way, but its fellow rival supercar brand from Italy has decided to abandon those plans, at least in the foreseeable future.
Lamborghini has officially shelved the Lanzador EV project, which was supposedly an all-electric 2+2 high performance crossover from Sant’Agata. CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Sunday Times they will pivot instead to plug-in hybrid vehicles, with the CEO going on saying interest in the Lamborghini clientele for battery-powered vehicles was “close to zero”.

The Lanzador EV project was announced back in 2023, and was touted as an ultra GT with more than a thousand horsepower. At the time, Lamborghini intended to release the model by around 2028. But after a thorough market study and extensive talks with customers and dealers, the call to axe the project was eventually executed.
“Investing heavily in full-EV development when the market and customer base are not ready would be an expensive hobby, and financially irresponsible toward shareholders, customers, [and] to our employees and their families,” said Winkelmann.

Aside from macroeconomic and political factors, Winkelmann added that Lamborghini’s clients found EVs less appealing than their internal combustion engine counterparts. The buyers are still chasing the full “emotional experience” of an ICE supercar with the styling, performance, and crucially, the noise.
“Plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds, combining the agility and low-rev boost of electric battery technology with the emotion and power output of an internal combustion engine,” Winkelmann said.
Lamborghini’s head honcho seems to be on point with his remarks, as their formula seems to be working in terms of sales. Last year, Sant’Agata sold a record 10,747 cars, with the Urus being its best seller.
