Volvo ES90 revealed for global market
In the last decade or so, the auto industry has made a big shift towards taller vehicles like crossover SUVs, as well as a big drive towards electrification with BEVs and a variety of hybrids. These trends have really left a lot of legacy passenger car nameplates out in the cold, particularly sedans.
What’s an automaker to do with the classic sedan formula? Volvo gave us the answer: adapt.

Volvo Cars has just revealed the ES90, a new all-electric flagship passenger car that may seem like a direct successor to the S90, but not quite from the looks of it. The reason is because Volvo chose to combine elements of an SUV with the extra ride height and space, the look and rear passenger doors of a fastback, but with the name and driving dynamics of a sedan. Oh, and the E designation means its electric too.
“The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life,” says Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars CEO. “It joins the EX90 SUV as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing.”

So what can customers expect? The ES90 is raked and sleek like a fastback or saloon, but appears to have a slightly taller height more akin to SUVs. The front makes use of a headlight design that Volvo calls Thor’s Hammer; that has become their signature as of late. As mentioned, the rear is quite distinctive with the fastback profile with new C-shaped LED lamps. Customers can select 7 colors as well as wheel options from 20 to 22 inches in diameter.

The vehicle was designed to be practical too. Being an EV, there’s a frunk that has 22 liters of capacity which can be used for small backpacks or the mobile charger. The boot is also quite large, as the body shape allows for 424 liters of cargo space even with all 5 seats occupied.
And speaking of seats, if this was to be used as a chauffeured transport, then the 3.1 meter wheelbase allows for extra legroom in the back. The higher roofline allows for easier ingress and egress without the executive’s head scraping the ceiling.

Being a flagship, Volvo used premium upholstery (including recycled materials) for the ES90 as well as upscale features for comfort and convenience. Options include the PM2.5 filter, a panoramic glass roof (with an electrochromic option), Bowers & Wilkins audio with up to 25 speakers, the new 14.5” Snapdragon-powered infotainment (with Google services), and more. And being a Volvo, customers can expect a full suite of the company’s very advanced and intuitive ADAS package and LIDAR which is why there’s a sensor on the leading edge on the roof.

Volvo equipped the ES90 with the new EV drive system that uses an 800-volt battery tech for faster charging, a range of up to 700 kilometers, and 670 horsepower.
Initial roll out of the ES90 is happening in Europe, and they will gradually launch the vehicle in other countries in late 2025 and 2026.
