LTO defers implementation of No Plate, No Travel to January 2025

LTO to start apprehending motorists with improvised, temporary plates after Dec 31, 2024

Earlier in August, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced that it would implement the No Plate, No Travel for motor vehicles (MVs) on September 1st as there are no more backlogs for license plates except for motorcycles.

According to LTO, its investigation revealed that these MV license plates remain unclaimed at dealerships for new vehicles. At the same time, millions of replacement plates for old MVs also remain unclaimed at various LTO branches. Because of this, the LTO issued a memorandum circular against the use of improvised and temporary plates.

“On the part of the LTO, I can assure you that there is no longer a backlog on the license plates for four-wheel vehicles. The problem, however, is that these license plates are not properly distributed and remain in the possession of the motor vehicle dealers,” says LTO Chief, Atty. Vigor Mendoza II in an earlier statement.

Fast forward to the present day, the LTO has now moved the deadline to December 31, 2024.

“We ask the motorists to claim and install their respective license plates as soon as they are available, either in the car dealerships, and replacement plates in our offices,” said Mendoza.

Mendoza further reiterated that there are absolutely no backlogs on license plates for MVs and there is no reason for vehicle owners not to claim and install them in their respective vehicles. The LTO Chief said he already instructed the LTO Regional Directors and District Office heads to coordinate with the local government units for the distribution of the license plates.
