Production version of the BMW Skytop Concept will be based on the 8 Series
Remember when BMW unveiled one heck of a concept car a few months ago? Called the Skytop, the two-seater droptop combines elegant lines and a sculpted body that was inspired by the BMW Z8 and 503. Paired with a driver-centric yet stylish cabin along with a powertrain derived from the M8 Competition, it has the makings of a possible production car from BMW.
At the time it was unveiled, however, BMW said the Skytop Concept would not be made into a production car due to costs. But due to incessant demand from customers with deep pockets, the automaker eventually changed their minds and said the Skytop would be turned into a production car.

Head of BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk confirmed this during an event at the House of BMW in Milan, Italy.
“To finally be able to announce that this car will be built is like a dream come true. Thank you for the very positive response around the globe and to the passionate team that worked on the project. The BMW Skytop is a truly exotic design and offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level,” said van Hooydonk.

Only 50 examples will be made by BMW and all have been spoken for. As for its price tag, BMW has yet to share that information but we won't be surprised if it's in the six-figure mark. As far as power is concerned, the production version of the Skytop will use a twin-turbo V8 derived from the M8 Competition which generates 625 PS and 750 Nm of torque. It is then paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox with AWD.

Since it uses the guts of the 8 Series, it's not surprising to see the Skytop's interior have a similar look. It's covered in high-quality premium materials like Nappa leather, high-gloss piano black accents, and hand-stitched brogue detailing. It also has a pair of high-definition displays, BMW Live Cockpit Plus, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

With all 50 examples spoken for already, we cannot help but be excited when the production version of the Skytop Concept is officially revealed in the future.
