Electric racing to be a pillar of Nissan

It is hard to believe that it has already been 10 years already since Formula E made its grand debut as the premiere all-electric auto racing series on the world's street circuirs. Originally there were only a few auto manufacturers that took part as works teams, but today the majority of the field is comprised of the world's biggest and most prestigious auto brands; in fact, Formula E has more auto brands with a team (7) than Formula One (5).

Out of the 11 teams in Formula E, only one is from Japan: Nissan.

It comes as no surprise that Nissan is competing in Formula E as the brand is the leading Japanese automaker when it comes to battery electric vehicles. The team evolved from the Renault e.dams team which has been in Formula E from the start. At the end of 2018, it was rebranded as Nissan e.dams, then was changed to the existing Nissan Formula E team wherein Nissan can truly controll the racing operations and the engineering.

And now they are reaffirming their commitment in Formula E by announcing that they will continue to race in the series until at least 2030. That means Nissan will race with the fourth generation cars of Formula E.

This makes Nissan the first automaker to make an extended commitment to the series. This will take Nissan's participation in the sport to a total of at least 12 years. That will make Formula E as Nissan's longest commitment to an FIA World Championship series.

The timing is perfect, as Nissan has also announced that they will be launching at least 34 new electrified cars by the end of 2030, and 19 of these will be full electric.

Currently, Formula E is about to make its debut race in Japan with the Tokyo e-Prix. The cars that are being raced now are the Gen3 spec cars which have 47 kWh batteries and up to 300 kw (408 PS). The upcoming Gen4 cars will have up to double the power at 600 kw or 816 PS.
