For Honda purists like myself who still long to see the NSX or Civic Type R lineage evolve on its own terms, this new direction might not be the most popular. But the wave of change in vehicle propulsion is unstoppable as the entire automotive world is already embracing it. The real question is, how can manufacturers build cars that still connect with enthusiasts on an emotional level?

The good news is that Honda’s next-generation vision goes beyond electric motor efficiency and battery technology. Judging from my experience at the Honda Auto Tech Workshop, the brand remains true to its roots, where the ‘joy of driving’ lies at the heart of every platform. Honda has distilled what truly matters: power, precision, and the pure thrill behind the wheel. The only difference now is that this familiar driving excitement is delivered through modern powertrain technologies that are anything but slow.

Next-gen Honda technologies

Right from the start, it’s very clear that the Super-ONE Prototype was built with fun in mind. This compact EV proves that electric vehicles don’t have to look boring and move like slot cars. It’s what I would call a modern electric pocket rocket that looks the part. From the wide fenders that are just waiting for enthusiasts to fit larger and wider tires, to a dedicated lightweight chassis and centrally mounted battery that lowers the center of gravity, it reads just like a true performance-oriented vehicle, making it a nimble, responsive, and engaging electric compact.

The Super-ONE Prototype’s “Boost Mode,” simulated 7-speed transmission, and Active Sound Control complement one another, faithfully recreating the feel and excitement of having a traditional engine, minus the screaming VTEC, of course. An experience which I personally got to sample during a brief test drive at Honda’s Tochigi R&D grounds as part of the Honda Auto Tech Workshop.

Apart from efficiency, Honda's Next-gen hybrid powertrains are also geared towards making more power. While the technical details are still under wraps, this next-gen, mid-size, hybrid study features a newly developed high-output combustion engine paired with an advanced electric system.

What I can confirm after a couple of test laps is that it delivers a genuinely enjoyable surge of power and torque. It made a clear point that Honda hasn’t forgotten what makes a driver’s car truly engaging.

Long recognized by enthusiasts for building cars that combine dynamic chassis design with precise handling, Honda is taking things even further with a complete redesign of the structural architecture of its next-generation models. The goal is to minimize structural flex by optimizing body rigidity and reinforcing the suspension mounting points to achieve better cornering and improved overall ride quality.

By enhancing cornering and overall stability, this directly translates to a more engaging driving experience. Something that becomes evident after driving a few laps on the test track. If this well-balanced, mid-size platform is any indication, it offers a compelling preview of what we can expect from the next-generation Civic, potentially arriving in 2027.

While the spotlight leans towards hybrid and electric powertrains, it's worth noting that Honda is still developing internal combustion engines. One of its next-gen technologies includes a V6 engine for its large-size hybrid system for the Pilot and Passport that’s popular in the North American market. Honda claims that the upcoming e:HEV V6 hybrid can deliver greater efficiency than its conventional gasoline counterparts through more advanced drive units and next-generation energy management control.

Charting a new path

With its long list of accomplishments in automobile production, motorsports, and even in car culture, Honda has more than earned its place in automotive history. While they are focusing on electrified mobility, this transition represents an inevitable step for any progressive carmaker. A significant change that heralds the start of a new chapter. One that redefines the brand without losing the essence that made it a favorite among driving enthusiasts.

While the era of Honda's revolutionary B to K series engine and VTEC technology of the past remains deeply ingrained in the hearts of enthusiasts, including myself, we’re now facing a new era where Honda continues to channel its engineering spirit, precision, balance, and emotion, just through different means. The powerplants may have changed, but the passion and the power of dreams remain the same.

Next-generation future

Based on what Honda showcased at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show and the Honda Auto Tech Workshop test drives, these next-generation vehicles and technologies are certainly worth looking forward to and something I wouldn’t hesitate to get behind the wheel and even own, given the chance.

Honda is certainly redefining the future of mobility, with advancements that go beyond mere function. More importantly, they have seamlessly integrated the human connection behind the wheel, ensuring that the “joy of driving” which the brand is known for remains very much alive for future generations to enjoy.
