More of the same
Soldiering on since its initial launch in 2012, when it replaced the Subaru XV, the Crosstrek stands as one of those crossovers that remains true to its purpose. With its eye-catching exterior, AWD capability and generous ground clearance, these traits easily allow the Crosstrek to radiate an adventurous and outdoorsy image. Attractive traits that enabled it to gain quite a huge following.
To keep its momentum going among car buyers and attract an even wider range, Subaru has come up with the Crosstrek GT Edition. This new variant retains all the inherent Subaru traits we all adore, such as a responsive flat-four engine, AWD running gear, and advanced safety features. In this case, with the GT Edition, it's what's inside the cabin and on the exterior where all the changes can be seen. Thus, collectively updating the Crosstrek’s overall looks and interior appointments.

So, what are the new exterior changes that come with the Crosstrek GT Edition? For starters, it receives an updated set of black trim pieces, including a rear roof spoiler. This is in addition to the familiar fender flares and blacked-out grille that’s a carry-over from the pre-facelift model. The redesigned trim pieces can be found adorning the bumpers, doors, and side skirts and come with silver-colored accents. These also serve to differentiate it from the other Crosstrek variants.

Overall, the textured black trim pieces and fender flares serve a purpose and greatly add to its adventurous and outdoorsy demeanor. However, the latest set of trim pieces found on the sides of the bumpers, along with the faux chrome on its rear twin exhaust outlets, make it look slightly overboard and something you wouldn’t expect from a Subaru.

No notable changes in terms of running gear as the Crosstrek GT Edition continues to be powered by Subaru’s naturally aspirated 2.0-liter, flat-four, boxer engine with the Lineartronic CVT transmission. Power levels are pegged at 156 PS and 196 Nm of torque, transferred to all four wheels using Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system. Despite the lack of a turbocharger, the tested and proven mill provides more than enough power.

Even the bottom rev range comes with usable power to match our normal traffic snarl. Except for spirited driving, where the sudden surge of power generated by a turbo, which Subaru is known for would be greatly appreciated.

As far as fuel consumption goes, the naturally aspirated boxer engine was able to get around 8-9 km/l in mixed driving conditions and 13 km/l on the highway. Depending on the gravity of the traffic, driving around the metro means having lightning-quick reaction times. But to do that, it requires temporarily disabling the Auto start-stop system accessed through the touchscreen panel. The way I see it, this fuel-saving feature would really come in handy if one should get stuck in traffic for hours while on the expressway.

Technology is one of Subaru’s core strengths, and the Crosstrek GT Edition comes with Subaru’s Enhanced EyeSight 4.0 Driver Assist Technology System. Composed of semi-autonomous driving assists and features, safety is its sole objective. Features like the lane departure warning, the obstacle warning system, and more are invaluable driving aids.
It even alerts you just in case you don’t notice that the car in front has moved. It’s really that smart and one of those safety features that you really don’t think about while driving. But in reality, it offers a great deal of reassurance knowing that it will come in handy. Just in case a situation arises.

Like most in its class, the Crosstrek GT Edition is a compact crossover that can provide ample seating for five persons. Whether one is sitting behind the wheel or as a passenger, it really doesn’t matter as the front and rear seats offer great comfort and support. However, it does lack the convenience of having power seats up front, which would make seat adjustments much easier.

Despite the lack of front power seats and rear A/C vents, Subaru certainly got things right when it comes to ergonomics as far as seating is concerned. The seats come well-bolstered and with supports at the right places. Thus allowing anyone to achieve the perfect driving and seating position. What's more, everything is well laid out and within easy reach. For added style, the GT Edition comes with black leather seats adorned with a GT logo and red piping on the edges of the seats. Unfortunately, this feature wasn't available on our demo unit.

Another welcome carry-over interior trait is the highly visible infotainment system. Hard not to miss at 11.6 inches, the touchscreen has a usable and easy-to-use interface featuring all of the basic functions, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen also incorporates the controls for the dual-zone air conditioning conveniently located at the bottom. The wireless phone charger and the connectivity ports located throughout the cabin comes in handy for the occupants.

Trunk space may not be as expansive, but it's actually spacious enough, measuring in at 19.6 cubic feet. Although it might be limited for really tall items due to the sloping rear hatch. But that’s where the versatile 60/40 split, fold flat seats come in handy as it opens up to a substantial 54.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

Like all Crosstrek variants, the GT Edition still retains Subaru’s standard all-wheel drive and good ground clearance, making it highly capable for use on light off-road terrain. Thanks to Subaru’s Global Platform, it rides on a more rigid structure and long travel suspension. Given the less-than-ideal quality of the roads surrounding the metro, it doesn’t pose a challenge. In fact, the Crosstrek GT Edition ably tackled a short rallycross stage with ease where a FWD crossover with low overhangs would probably struggle.

Equipped with 18-inch wheels and tire combo, the Crosstrek rides wonderfully on pavement and effectively cushions vibrations from uneven sections of asphalt. Overall, it handles well and is comfortable enough to drive that it would make a great candidate as a daily or an all-around, go-anywhere vehicle. With a price tag of PHP 2.088 million, the Crosstrek GT Edition carries quite the price tag for having a body kit. However, the Crosstrek on its own is great for those who want the practical benefits of having a compact crossover with remarkable AWD performance and modern technology
