Toyota supports first car recycling facility in PH

Toyota endorses En Tsumugi ELV Dismantler Corporation

Toyota, a leader in the automotive industry, has recognized En Tsumugi ELV Dismantler Corporation as a pioneering End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) dismantling facility in the Philippines, located in Mexico, Pampanga.

This facility is a wholly-owned venture of the Hung family, who also owns local metal recycling companies Supreme Mile Trading Corp. (SMTC) and CoroCrown Corporation. En Tsumugi emerged from a pilot project initiated by Japanese ELV dismantler Tsuruoka Co., Ltd. and received financial backing from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Several Japanese companies, including Toyota Motor Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd., contributed to the business development and technical support for this initiative. The establishment of En Tsumugi marks a significant step forward in the Philippine automotive sector's efforts to implement a responsible management system for ELVs—vehicles designated as waste by local authorities.

The facility, which accommodates various car makes, aims to set a benchmark for the local recycling industry while advancing environmental sustainability and the integration of best practices and international expertise.

Through its local branch, Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP), Toyota has provided technical assistance in areas such as environmental compliance, facility design, dismantling processes, equipment needs, and hazardous waste management. Additionally, TMP has donated five ELVs, including one hybrid electric vehicle, to En Tsumugi to serve as training units, enhancing the facility’s operational capabilities.

“The establishment of a local ELV dismantler aligns with the goals of the ‘Toyota Global 100 Dismantlers Project,’ which aims to establish a network of proper ELV dismantling facilities worldwide,” said TMP President Masando Hashimoto.

En Tsumugi is the 4th ELV dismantler in the Southeast Asian region to receive this endorsement, following similar facilities in Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
