Toyota sold 11.32 million vehicles in 2025, retains top global sales crown
For the sixth consecutive year, Toyota continues to be the world's leading automaker in terms of global sales.
This comes after the Japanese automaker was able to sell a total of 11.32 million vehicles in 2025, which is a 4.65% year-on-year increase from 2024. The total number of sales includes models sold by Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu, and Hino.
Sales of Toyota, Lexus, and Daihatsu all saw significant improvements in 2025, with Toyota itself taking the largest share, with 9,654,576 vehicles sold last year, a 3.7% increase. Meanwhile, Lexus sold 882,231 units in 2025, which is an increase of 3.6%. Then there's Daihatsu, which saw the biggest improvement of 25.8% after it was able to sell 675,285 vehicles in 2025.

Hino, Toyota's truck brand, was also able to help rake in the numbers despite experiencing a 12% decrease in total sales in 2025. Still, Hino was able to shift 110,483 vehicles last year, which helped Toyota clinch the top global sales crown for another consecutive year.
Sitting in second place is Volkswagen with 8.98 million units sold in 2025. The German auto group saw significant sales increases in its Skoda and Seat/Cupra brands, with sales of 1,043,900 units (12.7% increase) and 586,300 vehicles (5% increase), respectively. Lamborghini also experienced a 0.6% increase in sales after selling 10,700 units in 2025.

Surprisingly, Audi & Porsche, which are Volkswagen's biggest profit makers, saw a decline in sales after both brands were only able to shift 1,623,600 (down 2.9%) and 279,400 vehicles (down 10.1%), accordingly. As for Volkswagen itself, the brand sold 4,730,600 vehicles last year, which is a 1.4% decrease compared to 2024.
Other Volkswagen brands that saw a slump in sales are Bentley, which was able to sell 10,100 units (down 4.8%), and Volkswagen Commercial, which sold 393,700 vehicles (down 3.6%).

Sitting in third place is Hyundai after it was able to sell a total of 7.27 million units in 2025, which is a slight 0.6% improvement compared to 2024. In fourth place is General Motors (GM), which shifted a total of 6.18 million units in 2025 and saw a sales increase of 3.03% compared to 2024. Rounding up the top five is Stellantis, which saw a total sales figure of 5.48 million units in 2025.
With Toyota still taking the lead in global vehicle sales, we'll be curious to know just how the Japanese automaker will navigate itself amid growing competition from Chinese automakers like BYD, SAIC, and Geely.
