TMC sold 10.8 million vehicles in 2024

For the fifth year in a row, the Toyota Motor Corporation remains the world’s top-selling automaker.

Despite having a turbulent year with numerous issues in certification test procedures, TMC was still able to sell a total of 10.8 million vehicles in 2024. The number combines units sold by the companies under Toyota Motor Corporation, namely Toyota, Lexus, Hino, and Daihatsu.

While TMC remains number 1, the Japanese automaker posted a total of 3.8% drop in global unit sales last year. Daihatsu posted the biggest dent as worldwide sales for the compact car company dropped by 32.1%. For its passenger car unit in Toyota and Lexus, sales fell 1.4% as they were able to shift 10.1 million vehicles even though Lexus posted a 3.3% increase for 2024.

The majority of passenger car sales still consist of ICE vehicles, but Toyota was able to sell a total of 4.5 million electrified vehicles in 2024. 4.1 million of those include HEVs, while about 150,000 are PHEV units and 140,000 are BEVs. This represents a 23.2% increase compared to last year.

The Volkswagen Group, on the other hand, remains in second place with just over 9 million vehicles sold while Hyundai Motor Group is likely to fill the podium in third with over 7.2 million sales in 2024.
