Toyota GR Corolla gets subtle (but important) upgrades for 2026

2026 Toyota GR Corolla gets better body rigidity, improved engine performance at high speeds

Last month, we reported that Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) received approval to bring a new passenger vehicle with a 1618cc engine. Based on the reference mass and engine size, it looks like the GR Corolla will finally make its way to the Philippines.

But before the 300 PS hot hatch makes its way here, we're hoping the PH-spec GR Corolla will get the 2026 model year upgrade. Toyota recently introduced some updates to the GR Corolla, and while it doesn't get any major or cosmetic upgrades, the automaker was busier giving it better structural integrity and driving performance, and then some.

For starters, Toyota gave the 2026 GR Corolla more structural rigidity by extending its structural adhesive to 32.7 meters. The additional 13.9 meters compared to the pre-updated version translates to enhanced body rigidity while minimizing weight increase. This was applied primarily to the front of the body, floor, and areas around the rear wheel wells.

Next, Toyota installed a cool air duct for the 1.6L turbocharged three-cylinder that pushes out 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque. According to the automaker, the cool air duct is there to maintain stable high engine output even when the engine bay temperature rises during full-throttle driving. The cool air duct activates during high engine speeds and has been added to the secondary intake duct (below the air cleaner).

Last but not least, the 2026 GR Corolla is now available with a new JBL sound system. Not only does it come with better speakers, but the JBL sound system gets a subwoofer in the luggage compartment for that extra audio fidelity. Purists, however, may not like the additional feature of the sound system, Active Sound Control (ASC).

In a nutshell, it pipes in sporty sounds through the vehicle's speakers that match the acceleration and deceleration of the GR Corolla while under load. It can even mimic the sound of the exhaust burbling, which is akin to anti-lag systems making that signature popping sound in the exhausts. While it's great as a party trick, purists may find this feature too gimmicky. Fortunately, users can turn this feature off if they do not want to hear piped-in engine sounds while driving. And if drivers want the cabin to be quieter, the 2026 GR Corolla now also comes with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

With the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla set to go on sale in Japan first starting November 3, 2025, we're hoping Toyota Motor Philippines gets the upgraded version of the hot hatch should they actually launch it here soon.
