New e-Power system by Nissan to deliver better fuel economy, fewer emissions

Nissan may not have the best start of the year in 2025, but that doesn't mean the automaker hasn't been busy of late. In fact, the Japanese brand is on the offensive as the company recently outlined its plans with new products and next-generation technologies.

We already saw the all-new Nissan Leaf, which has transformed into a crossover while the D23 Nissan Navara will soldier on and will get a major redesign along with plenty of new high-tech features. But what about the innovative e-Power system, which combines the best features of an EV and a hybrid?

Nissan has announced that the third-generation e-Power system is set to debut later this year and will feature notable improvements in efficiency. The automaker says the new system is targeted to provide up to 15% better fuel economy at high speeds compared to the current e-Power system. Moreover, the third-generation e-Power is set to deliver lower emissions and have better refinement through reduced noise and vibration.

As before, the latest e-Power system will make use of a small-capacity engine and a lithium-ion battery pack to power an electric motor that drives the wheels. The result is an EV-like driving experience that is characterized by powerful and responsive acceleration paired with quiet operation.

But unlike the current system which makes use of a 1.2L three-cylinder engine on certain models, the third-generation e-Power will make use of a new 1.5L engine. In addition, a new 5-in-1 electric drive system will be introduced, which shares core components with Nissan's latest EV powertrain.

The third-generation e‐Power system will debut on the Qashqai in Europe later in FY25. It will then be followed in FY26 by the next-generation Rogue in North America and a large minivan for the Japanese market.

There's no mention of whether the all-new Kicks (already available in North America) will be getting the new third-generation e-Power system. But given the popularity of the e-Power system in Southeast Asian markets like the Philippines, perhaps we can expect it to be offered in the distant future. We're also hoping that the e-Power system will be available in other models in the Philippines.
