ANCAP awards BYD Shark 6 with top safety marks in crash and safety tests

We already know BYD Cars Philippines is gearing up to launch the Shark 6 DM-o very soon. Heck, not only were we able to spot it roaming around Bonifacio Global City (BGC) last week, but the automaker officially confirmed that the first batch of Shark 6 units is already in the country.

Clearly, BYD Cars Philippines is preparing for a deluge of customers who will line up and get a brand-new Shark 6 pickup truck. But just how safe the pickup truck will be when it comes to accidents? Based on recent tests by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), the plug-in hybrid pickup truck is one of the safest.

Recently, ANCAP announced that the BYD Shark 6 received a perfect five-star safety rating. It was able to deliver top-notch protection to both adult and child occupants in the frontal offset, full-width frontal, side impact, and oblique pole impact tests. It was able to achieve an 85% score for Adult Occupant Protection as the cabin remained stable while all key body sections of the test dummies returned a good protection rating.

It also scored an 87% in Child Occupant Protection as both the 10-year old and 6-year old test dummies returned with good protection data. For extra peace of mind, all variants of the BYD Shark 6 are equipped with ISOFIX child seat anchors to keep babies and younger children safe in the event of a crash.

Apart from that, the pickup truck comes with a plethora of intelligent driver aids like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) that can detect other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. The AEB also works while in reverse for peace of mind when backing out of parking slots. The system was also able to detect movement from an approaching cyclist from behind to prevent accidental impact from the driver opening the door.

“With five of BYD’s current local models having now earned top ANCAP safety ratings, it's evident that new manufacturers are prioritizing safety as they enter the market to align with consumer demands. Following the recently rated GWM Cannon Alpha hybrid ute, we expect to see an increase in electrified options in the utility space. And so far, they’re meeting the mark,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.

With the Shark 6 proving itself a safe pickup truck, BYD is giving interested customers more reasons to get one.
