Next-generation Nissan Skyline confirmed after release of teaser images

Believe it or not, the Skyline name is very much alive. While mostly associated with the much-revered GT-R (which ultimately became a standalone model), the regular Nissan Skyline has always been a staple in the brand’s lineup, albeit overshadowed by the GT-R halo model.

After the R34 model, the Skyline name became shared with Nissan’s luxury brand Infiniti, resulting in the G35, G37, Q40, and Q60 models. The model is currently in its 13th generation (V37), which was first released in 2014, making it due for a full model change.

Well, Nissan is getting ready to reveal the all-new Skyline after the automaker released several teaser images of the next-generation model. Part of the brand’s long-term direction, the all-new Nissan Skyline will serve as one of its “Heartbeat” models, which embody the brand’s identity, emotional value, and innovation.

Based on the teaser images, it looks like the all-new Skyline will have an exterior design inspired by previous generations. Alfonso Albaisa, Global Design Director at Nissan, confirmed that the Skyline would have a design “inspired by the past” but will not have a “retro-styling exercise”.

The front fascia of the all-new Skyline will feature a sharp look that’s complemented by a pair of LED daytime running lights. Also worth mentioning is the signature Skyline “S” hood ornament, which is a throwback to previous generations that used to have them. Around the back, the all-new Skyline will have a pair of circular taillights, which is another callback to the past models.  Last but not least is a Skyline badge on the rear quarter panel, which further highlights the next generation’s tribute to past models.

Powertrain details for the all-new Nissan Skyline have yet to be revealed. However, the automaker did say they will have a performance-oriented V6 sedan soon. Given that the Skyline has always been available as a four-door sedan (alongside a two-door coupe), perhaps the next-generation Skyline will get the 3.0L twin-turbo V6 that’s shared with the Fairlady Z.

That means we can expect the all-new Nissan Skyline to produce well over 400 PS and more than 475 Nm of torque. Heck, we also won’t be surprised if the next-generation Skyline will be available with a manual gearbox besides an automatic transmission.

Besides being sold as a Nissan, the all-new Skyline will also most likely be offered as an Infiniti per tradition. Once revealed, the next-gen Skyline will most likely continue to carry the Q60 name as its previous iterations.

With Nissan officially announcing that there will be a new Skyline, it looks like sports sedans will still be a core part of the brand’s identity.
