Nissan on track to bring back Xterra SUV in 2028

There’s plenty to look forward to in the next few years for Nissan. Aside from the launch of the four models coming to the Philippines this year, the Japanese automaker was generous enough to give teasers on its other future vehicles.

This time, Nissan has teased what the new generation Xterra will look like once it returns sometime in 2028. For those not in the know, the Xterra nameplate is a revered model in the US market, and made quite the following with its rugged frame-based structure, V6 engine, and off-road capability.

Those three characteristics are set to continue in the returning model, as Nissan says it will be the first model in a new family of all-new, body-on-frame vehicles. But what’s new for 2028 will be a V6 hybrid powertrain, designed to give the Xterra the desired efficiency that customers demand nowadays.

In terms of the look, Nissan showed the front fascia of the all-new Xterra, and it does bear some resemblance to the China-developed Frontier Pro PHEV. It has a squarish front grille with a distinct LED light signature that pays tribute to the D21 hardbody. And unlike the Frontier Pro that features the Nissan logo, the Xterra has the Nissan typeface spelled out on its grille.

According to a previous report, the model will be built alongside the Frontier pick-up at Nissan’s Canton plant in Mississippi. An Infiniti version based on the Xterra could also roll out, which means Nissan could have an answer to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado / Lexus GX once it comes out by 2028.
