Today’s modern turbocharged engines with direct injection are prone to what’s called “pre-ignition” which indicates abnormal combustion—characterized by an audible metallic noise and associated with a short loss in power. This is called Low-Speed pre Ignition or LSPI, generating very high-pressure peaks in the combustion chamber that can lead to piston damage and ultimately engine failure. To safeguard such engines from abnormal combustions, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has developed the SP standard rating.
