MG Motor PH gets DOE recognition for G50 PHEV

MG Motor Philippines recently confirmed it will be at this year's Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) with something special. While the automaker is keeping its cards close to its chest, the Department of Energy (DOE) has given us a clue as to what might be launched next week.

Recently, the DOE has recognized the MG G50 PHEV (also called the Maxus G50 Plus PHEV) as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It's listed as a 2026 model year vehicle and has a gross vehicle weight of 2,350 kg. More importantly, it has a maximum engine power of 70 kW or 95 PS, a maximum electric output of 160 kW or 218 PS, and a battery capacity of 18.65 kWh. Size-wise, the G50 PHEV measures 4825mm long, 1825mm wide, and 1800mm tall.

Other specifications have yet to be revealed, although a quick look at what China gets has given us a better idea of what to expect. For starters, the powertrain consists of a 1.5L naturally aspirated inline-four that puts out 95 PS with 130 Nm of torque and an electric motor that produces 218 PS and 280 Nm of torque. It also has an 18.65 kWh battery pack that supports up to 6.6 kW of charge and allows the MG G50 PHEV to travel on electric power for up to 95 km.

With both the engine and electric motor working, along with a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery, MG claims the G50 PHEV can travel more than 1,000 km. Besides having regenerative braking to recharge the battery on the go, the G50 PHEV also supports 6.6 kW AC charging.

With DOE already recognizing the MG G50 as a PHEV and the automaker receiving regulatory approval for a new vehicle with a 1496cc engine earlier this year, it looks like the electrified MPV is getting ready for its Philippine debut.

Could we see the G50 PHEV make its big reveal next week at MIAS 2026?
