LTO launch online driver's license renewal for OFWs in Taiwan next month

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Filipinos living abroad will soon be able to renew their driver's licenses online via the LTMS Online Portal of the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

This comes after the agency announced they will embark on maximizing the use of the online portal in compliance with the full digitization of government services as ordered by President Ferdinand “Bong-Bong” Marcos Jr. According to LTO Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II, the full online renewal of driver's licenses is intended to ease the burden of OFWs in transacting with the LTO. Before, OFWs had to endure long wait times before their licenses became valid again.

“We hope to fully implement this within this year. Once fully implemented, this is indeed a big help to all of our clients, especially OFWs because they do not have to go to our offices or wait for their return to the Philippines to renew their driver's licenses,” said Mendoza.

The LTO said they first plan to launch the online program in Taiwan in September of this year. The agency is currently working with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) under the leadership of Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac. In addition, Mendoza mentioned the digitization efforts will be showcased to Filipinos in Taiwan during a big celebration in the area to wherein the LTO was invited.

Aside from Taiwan, Mendoza shared they are also working with the DMW to expand the online license renewal program to the Middle East, Europe, the USA, and other countries with a huge Filipino population.

“Hindi lang ito sa Taiwan, buong mundo na po ito at malaking tulong ito para sa ating mga kababayan because the driver's license we issue is recognized worldwide,” added Mendoza.

[It will not just be in Taiwan, this will be all over the world and it will help our countrymen because the driver's license we issue is recognized worldwide].

With the LTO looking to make online license renewal easier for OFWs and Filipinos living abroad, we sure hope this program becomes available soon in other countries beyond Taiwan.
