Result Japan gives Toyota 86 a proper throwback with AE86-inspired styling kit
We're only a few days away from the opening of the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, and Japanese tuners continue to reveal what they have in store at the annual auto show. One tuning shop by the name of Result Japan will be at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon with one heck of a build.
As we all know, the GR86 (and the previous 86) owe their existence to the Toyota Corolla AE86 Trueno. With a lightweight body, a high-revving engine under the hood, and a RWD layout, both cars are essentially the same despite being launched in different decades. But if there's one feature that enthusiasts miss seeing on the GR86, it's the signature pop-up headlights of the AE86 Trueno.

Enter the Neo96, a re-imagination of the Toyota 86 that features a flat hood, an old school front bumper, and pop-up headlights. The result is a vintage-inspired look for the modern sports coupe that also pays tribute to its roots.
Starting with the most obvious, the classic front bumper is painted black and features the AE86's signature foglights and turn signals. They are then complemented by the eye-catching pop-up headlights that serve as the main highlights of the vehicle. The Neo86 also features widened fenders with black bolt-on extensions, side skirts, and a black-and-white livery accompanied by what appear to be RS Watanabe eight-spoke wheels, a direct nod to Takumi's AE86 in Initial D.

Since the Neo86 uses the previous 86 as a base, it's powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated Boxer engine that puts out 200 PS and 205 Nm of torque.
For now, the vehicle that Result Japan showed before the show is a prototype. However, enthusiasts will be happy to know the tuner plans to make the kit available for global customers. Since the Toyota 86 was also available as the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S, we'll be curious if the kit is compatible with the other 86 derivatives.

Pricing is not yet available, but Result Japan did say they will be accepting pre-orders at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, where they will hold the official debut on January 9.
Anyone planning on turning their Toyota 86 into the Neo86, complete with pop-up headlights?
