Peugeot looking to enter EV market with e-2008

It’s been a while since we last heard from Peugeot Philippines and its movements in the local market. Apart from their appearance in this year’s MIAS, Peugeot has had a quiet year without any all-new model introductions for 2024.

That may all change though for next year. We got hold of information that Peugeot Philippines has received homologation approval from the Land Transportation Office (LTO). The said vehicle is the all-electric Peugeot e-2008.

It’s essentially the zero-emissions version of the 2008 crossover that generated a big buzz for Peugeot Philippines when they re-entered the market under the Astara Group. They last previewed the e-2008 at the 2023 edition of MIAS, but since then the e-2008 has received quite a substantial update in the global market.

The most recent update sees the new Peugeot corporate logo in its front fascia, along with a different arrangement for the LED headlights and its DRLs. Likewise, the rear end gets revised taillights and a more modern font design for the PEUGEOT typeface.

Apart from the exterior changes, the interior of the new e-2008 gets a bigger 10-inch touchscreen with better smartphone connectivity features.

In the global market, the e-2008 has a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers an electric motor with 136 PS and 260 Nm of torque. According to the LTO document, the EV can reach up to 328 km of range and fully charge its batteries in 30 minutes under a DC fast charger, while it takes 7.5 hrs in an AC plug.

Since its last preview, a lot has changed in the landscape of electrified vehicles in the Philippine market. Plug-in hybrids and range-extended EVs are on the rise, while most charging infrastructures in the country are beginning to phase out free charging and start to collect fees.

With that being the case, do you think the e-2008 will still make sense in the country? Or is it too late for the party? Share your thoughts in the comments.
