353 HP GWM Cannon V6 unleashed in the PRC

If there's one thing GWM is doing great right now, it's going against the tide. Whereas most brands nowadays are shifting towards electrification and downsized engines, GWM still believes there will always be room for internal combustion engines (ICEs).

Heck, during the recent 2025 Auto Shanghai, they revealed a twin-turbo V8 that's expected to power a wide array of vehicles in GWM's lineup. Meanwhile, over in Thailand, they launched the turbo-diesel-powered Tank 300, which we hope will make its way here soon.

Now, GWM has just revealed what could be the most powerful (and capable) version of its midsize pickup truck. Say hello to the 2025 Cannon V6, and it gets a bevy of upgrades to match its performance pedigree. Starting with the most obvious, the 2.4L turbo-diesel engine has been replaced with a 3.0L turbocharged V6 featuring a 48V mild-hybrid system. The result is 353 PS and a healthy 500 Nm of torque from the six-cylinder engine. If those figures look familiar, that's because it's the same engine derived from the much larger GWM Cannon Performance, which was launched in 2023.

Power is then sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission, a part-time 4WD system, and a high-load torque transfer system. Besides having one heck of a V6 under the hood, GWM also gave the Cannon a new suspension system to better take on the rough terrain, bigger brakes to help slow down the pickup quicker, and a new cooling system to keep the V6 engine at optimal temperatures no matter the situation.

For now, it looks like the Cannon V6 will only be offered with a single cab as it will measure 4963mm long, 1975mm wide, and 1950mm tall. Design-wise, the V6-powered Cannon gets some unique features like a black grille, thick wheel arches, and a V6 logo on the tailgate. To make it capable when going off-road, the Cannon V6 has been fitted with features such as tow hooks, a front power winch, a snorkel that allows it to take on high waters with ease, a luggage box in the bed, and an external electrical power supply.

The GWM Cannon V6 is set to go on sale later this year, which could become a popular choice for buyers who want something powerful but don't need the heft of a bigger full-size pickup truck. The only question now is, can we expect GWM Philippines to bring this here in the future?
