GAC Motor PH delays launch of Emkoo Hybrid

During the 2024 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS), GAC Motor Philippines distributor Astara previewed the Emkoo Hybrid. Essentially the electrified version of the brand's sleek compact crossover, the Emkoo Hybrid trades turbo ICE power for electric assist.

With a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder under the hood, the engine makes 140 PS with 180 Nm of torque. With the help of an electric motor, the Emkoo Hybrid delivers a total system output of 238 PS and 300 Nm of pull. Power is then sent to a two-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).

At the time it was revealed at MIAS 2024, GAC Motor Philippines did not release any pricing details regarding the Emkoo Hybrid. They did mention, however, that they planned to release it this June. Unfortunately, it seems the automaker has decided to postpone its launch for another time. Curious about this, we asked an insider about the automaker's plans as to when the automaker will reveal the Emkoo Hybrid.

Speaking with an anonymous source, they shared with us that the launch of the Emkoo Hybrid has been moved to a later date, most possibly around July as they are still finalizing the price. In addition, the company is finishing up the training of its sales executives and maintenance/service crew. Rather than launching the vehicle right away, GAC Motor Philippines wants its personnel to know exactly what they have before they reveal it to the public.

But what about the Emkoo Hybrid itself? Well, the automaker has been busy testing the vehicle on public roads and they were surprised by its performance and fuel efficiency. During a long-term test, the Emkoo Hybrid was able to average 23 km/L – beating GAC Motor's average claim of 22 km/L. Not only that, but they said the electrified Emkoo retained its swift performance despite not having a turbocharged engine under the hood.

Official pricing details regarding the Emkoo Hybrid have yet to be made public. However, our insider told us that it will be slightly more expensive than the regular Emkoo which tops out at PHP 1.498 million. But since the Emkoo Hybrid is more fuel efficient, produces fewer carbon emissions, and will be exempt from the number coding scheme, GAC Motor Philippines believes buyers will be attracted to getting the said crossover.
