Ford rolls out an electric Bronco with tilting roof for camping

Ford’s electric Bronco for China has a unique roof feature

In the Philippines, we know the Ford Bronco as a dedicated off-road SUV in its Outer Banks  Sasquatch Package, having 37-inch wheels, removable roof panels, and a powerful Ecoboost V6 motor.

But over in China, there’s another Bronco that’s taking a very different path. Ford in the PRC is officially pre-selling the Bronco Basecamp electric SUV. That’s right. The Bronco has an EV and EREV version with a different platform, as it is built by Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Ford’s joint venture partner in Jiangxi province.

What caught our eye was the Bronco Basecamp’s "One-Touch Roof Camping Package”, which will be complementary for early reservers of the SUV. The package includes an electric pop-up roof that tilts 14.2 inches skyward, resembling a roof top tent that’s usually being fitted by aftermarket off-road specialists in SUVs.

Likewise, Ford added one-touch automatic folding front headrests to cover both rows when you’re using the Bronco-branded mattresses that also come with the SUV.

Despite being a battery-powered SUV, the Bronco Basecamp stays true to the OG’s rugged styling. The front clip has an illuminated “BRONCO” badge integrated to the headlights, while the hood comes with functional air channels designed to improve aerodynamics and extend range.

As the Chinese market leans more towards having intelligent driving features, the Ford Bronco Basecamp EV has a roof-mounted LiDAR unit with more than 30 high-precision sensors and cameras for the ADAS systems.

The pure electric Bronco has dual motors powered by a 105.4 kWh battery, making it capable of delivering up to 650 km of range. Meanwhile, the extended-range variant has a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine charging a 43.7 kWh battery pack to power the dual motor setup. On this end, the EREV offers 220 km of EV-only range and a combined range of up to 1,220 km.

Currently, the Ford Territory is the sole model that comes from China in the local lineup. Should Ford PH consider adding the Bronco Basecamp? Let us know in the comments.
