EX5 is Geely’s compact electric crossover for global markets

Geely may have been quiet in the Philippine market for some time, but the automaker is preparing for a comeback. While they already revealed the specs and prices of the 2024 Coolray, there have been no new developments as of late…until now.

Recently, Geely Auto International Corporation (GAIC) invited us for a special preview of the EX5. It’s an all-electric crossover that’s stylish, high-tech and is gunning against the likes of the BYD Atto 3. Built on the brand’s newest electrified platform called Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA), the EX5’s chassis makes use of the latest technologies that take advantage of lightweight construction, a more compact electric drive system, multi-energy layouts, and precise handling.

Starting with its looks, the EX5 features a smooth and curvaceous design that gives the vehicle an upmarket and stylish look. The front end features a sleek pair of LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, a closed-off grille that shows Geely’s new logo, and J-shaped LED lighting signatures on the front bumper.

Around the back, Geely appeared to have borrowed inspiration from Porsche to design the EX5’s rear thanks to the Cayenne (or Macan)-like LED taillights, tailgate, and quarter panels. It also gets a full-width LED light bar adds to the vehicle’s sleeker appearance. Last but not least, the EX5 is fitted with diamond-cut alloy wheels for that extra flair.

Size-wise, the EX5 measures 4615mm long, 1901mm wide, 1670mm tall, and has a 2750mm wheelbase. With the second-row seats up, Geely says the EX5 has 461 liters worth of cargo space. Fold those down, however, and Geely claims the EX5 can lug up to 1877 liters worth of luggage.

Open the doors and the Geely EX5 welcomes you into a cozy interior that’s also packed to the brim. Depending on customer preference, the interior of the EX5 can come in various colors aside from the regular white or gray color palette. These include burgundy, green, brown, tan, and many more. The front seats come with a massage function which is great for when drivers who need additional relaxation while on the road.

In terms of features, the EX5 comes with a digital instrument cluster, a massive touchscreen infotainment system that comes with the FLYME Auto system that provides seamless phone connectivity, a FLYME sound system, FLYME Auto Cockpit which serves as its intelligent driver aids, LED ambient lighting, over-the-air updates, power-adjustable front seats with memory & massage function, front & rear center armrests, and a power sunroof.

Powering the EX5 is the brand’s innovative 11-in-1 electric drive system. Unlike most EV powertrains, Geely’s new drive system combines key components of the powertrain and drivetrain in a compact and lightweight package. These include the inverter, the electric motor, the reduction gear, conduits, and drivetrain systems.

The result is a total weight of just around 80 kg for the powertrain alone which makes the EX5 lighter than most EVs. It is then paired to a 60.22 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack which can travel up to nearly 500 km based on the NEDC cycle. The electric motor, meanwhile, makes 218 PS with 320 Nm of torque which allows the EX5 to sprint from 0 - 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

The EX5 also has a top speed of 175 km/h, three selectable drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport), 100 kW DC fast charging that can recharge the battery from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes, 11 kW AC charging, a vehicle-to-load (V2L) system, and a vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) power transfer system.

There’s no word yet as to when the EX5 will make its Philippine debut. However, we won’t be surprised should the new EV make its way here around Q1 of next year. The only question now is, how soon can we expect the EX5 to actually land in the Philippines?
