BYD Malaysia launches Sealion 7 midsize crossover EV

BYD has been on a roll in the Philippines this year. Not only have they launched multiple new models in quick succession, but they have also opened several new dealerships in a matter of months. With the automaker growing at an exponential rate, it's not surprising to see that BYD is set to grow even larger soon.

Elsewhere around Southeast Asia, BYD is also busy launching new models. Just a few days ago, the automaker launched the Sealion 7 in Malaysia, an all-electric midsize crossover SUV that is set to take on the likes of the Tesla Model Y. First launched at the 2024 Auto China (AKA Beijing Auto Show), the Sealion 7 features a sleek coupe-like roofline. The result is an aerodynamic exterior that's complemented by a Sealion 6-like face.

It also has styling elements borrowed from the Seal thanks to the full-width LED taillights, the tapered D-pillars, and the stylish rear bumper with black body cladding. Depending on the variant chosen, the Sealion 7 can come with 19-inch wheels or 20-inch alloys. Size-wise, it measures 4830mm long, 1925mm wide, 1620mm tall, and has a 2930mm wheelbase.

Open the doors and the Sealion 7 welcomes guests into a tech-laden cabin. It comes with the brand's now-familiar 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, a double-layered dashboard design, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, a heads-up display, a four-zone climate control, and Nappa leather upholstery. Like other BYD models on offer, the Sealion 7 also comes with intelligent voice control that can control certain parts of the vehicle like the sunroof and climate control.

Other available features in the Sealion 7 include; a 12-speaker Dynaudio system, a 50W wireless charging pad, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, front & rear USB charging ports, power-adjustable front seats with heating & cooling function, and a power tailgate.

Powering the Sealion 7 is an 82.56 kWh BYD Blate Battery that can power either a single electric motor or dual electric motors. The former makes 313 PS with 380 Nm of torque while the latter generates 530 PS and 690 Nm of pull. The RWD version is rated to reach up to 567 km based on the NEDC cycle while the AWD variant can only get up to 480 km on a full charge. When it comes to recharging, the Sealion 7 is capable of handling 11kW AC charging as well as 150 kW of DC fast charging.

With the Sealion 7 now available in Malaysia, it might not be long before BYD Cars Philippines brings it to the country. The only question now is, will we also see the BYD Shark pickup truck make its way here next year?
