GWM is out to challenge midsize 4x4 SUV segment with 2026 H9 4x4

GWM Philippines took its time to finally join the midsize 4x4 SUV segment, and by the looks of things, the wait could really be worth it.

Making its highly anticipated Philippine launch is the 2026 GWM Haval H9 4x4 – a 7-seat, four-wheel-drive turbodiesel SUV that combines premium aspirations with serious off-road capabilities.

Starting with the exterior dimensions, the 2026 Haval H9 measures 4950mm long, 1976mm wide, 1930mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2850mm. Ground clearance is 224 mm, while wading depth is rated at 800 mm. For reference, the H9’s size is comparable to the likes of the Ford Everest and the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250.

Speaking of which, the Haval H9 is also built on a body-on-frame platform, with a double wishbone front suspension setup and a coil spring, solid axle, multi-link setup at the rear. This makes the Haval H9 as GWM's first truck-based seven-seater SUV in the country.

In terms of its styling, the Haval H9 has a boxy exterior design for that retro, rugged look. The front fascia has a rectangular grille with four horizontal chrome bars flanked by round LED headlights, with swing-out doors at the rear where the spare tire is mounted. Other exterior features include soundproof glass for the front half (windshield and front doors), functional roof rails, and 18-inch wheels on 265/60 series tires.

Inside, the Haval H9 welcomes you to its upscale cabin with plenty of synthetic leather, soft touch surfaces, and interior trims that give out a high-quality finish. There’s a 10.25-inch TFT instrument panel, and a 14.6-inch central control screen that’s equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the off-road information display and the 540-degree view camera.

Other features include a tri-zone climate control system, a cooled center console, a 50W wireless charger, an 8-speaker sound system, aviator type lever for the gear selector, as well as a sunroof in its generous list.

Powering the Haval H9 is a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel that’s shared with the Cannon pickup. It delivers 186 PS at 3600 rpm, and 480 Nm of torque from 1500 to 2500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for manual control, sending power to all four wheels with its full-time 4WD system.

The driver can select from seven drive modes in the H9 – that’s Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow, Mud, Sand, and 4L for serious off-roading conditions. Likewise, there’s an off-road expert mode that electronically controls the stability, anti-lock brakes, and other driving assist systems to maximize the H9’s off-road abilities.

In terms of safety, the H9 comes with six airbags as standard, along with the usual traction control, ABS, stability control, hill descent, hill start, tire pressure monitoring, and even an automatic crash unlock function for the doors.

As for pricing, GWM is seriously stepping up to challenge established 4x4 SUVs with its PHP 1,998,888 suggested retail price. That comes with a 7-year or 200,000 km warranty. But for a limited time period, GWM is lowering that to PHP 1,928,888. Available colors include Stealth Gray, Iceberg White, and Midnight Black.
