Public debut to take place at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show

Toyota is sticking to its multi-path approach towards net zero carbon emissions, believing that BEV isn't the only way. That doesn’t mean that they’ve completely shunned the idea of rolling out BEV though.

The Japanese auto giant has presented the all-new Urban Cruiser: a battery-electric compact crossover that’s basically a rebadged version of Suzuki’s eVitara. The segment for the Urban Cruiser in Europe is highly competitive, and Toyota is looking to take its share.

Size-wise, the Urban Cruiser is slightly larger than the TNGA platform Yaris Cross hybrid, measuring 4285 mm long, 1800 mm wide, 1640 mm tall and a wheelbase of 2700 mm. Like its twin, the eVitara, the Urban Cruiser has a 5.2m turning radius which makes it very maneuverable in tight spaces.

The Urban Cruiser distinguishes itself from its Suzuki twin by having a different front fascia, taking the “Hammerhead” style of the all-new Camry and the all-new Prius. Apart from the Toyota badges, the rest of the vehicle is pretty much the same as the eVitara.

Inside, the Urban Cruiser’s longer wheelbase opens up more cabin space compared to the TNGA Yaris Cross. While the eVitara has a two-tone black and chocolate brown motif, the Urban Cruiser goes for more black with silver accents on the trim pieces. It gets the same 10.25-inch digital dash and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen with the rear 40:20:40 split seats equipped with a sliding mechanism to increase legroom.

Much like the eVitara, the Urban Cruiser is available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations with two battery options. The base FWD has a 49 kWh battery with the electric motor putting out 144 PS and 189 Nm of torque.

The larger 61 kWh battery can also be availed in the FWD version, increasing power to 174 PS but torque remains the same at 189 Nm. The most powerful version of the Urban Cruiser goes to the AWD version, with 184 PS and 300 Nm of torque.

The Urban Cruiser is likely to share the same production line with the eVitara at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in India, with its public debut scheduled to take place at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show in early January.

Toyota says they still plan to roll out six BEVs by 2026. So far, they only have two (bZ4X and Urban Cruiser). That only means there's plenty of models to come in 2025 for the Japanese auto giant.
