Volvo Trucks to release a long-range version of its FH Electric truck

The electrification of heavy trucks continues to become more viable as brands can extract more range from their big rigs. One such brand is Volvo Trucks as they recently announced they will launch a long-range version of its FH Electric truck that will be able to travel up to 600 km on one charge. With it, it will allow transport and logistic companies to operate zero-emissions trucks over long distances without having to stop to recharge.

“Our new electric flagship will be a great complement to our wide range of electric trucks and enable zero-exhaust emission transport also for the longer distances. It will be a great solution for transport companies with a high annual mileage on their trucks and with a strong commitment to reduce CO2,” said Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks.

The new long-range electric truck from Volvo will be made possible thanks to a new driveline technology dubbed e-axle which allows for more significant battery capacity onboard. Combined with more efficient batteries and an improved battery management system, it allowed Volvo Trucks to extract up to 600 km of range for its big rig.

“The transport sector represents seven percent of global carbon emissions. Battery-electric trucks are important tools to reduce the climate footprint. Besides the important environmental gains that electric trucks bring, they offer truck drivers a much better working environment, with much lower levels of noise and vibrations,” added Alm.

With Volvo Trucks looking to transition towards a fossil-free transport to reach its net-zero emissions target by 2040, the company ultimately looks to use a three-path technology strategy. This approach will be built on battery-electric, fuel-cell electric, and combustion engines that run on renewable fuels such as green hydrogen, biogas, or HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil).
