Bangkok 2024: Isuzu brings Elf EV to Southeast Asia, PH next?

All-electric Isuzu Elf EV truck make regional debut at 2024 Bangkok International Motor Show

Isuzu not only brought the D-Max EV concept pickup truck at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show. Also making its way to Southeast Asia is the zero-emissions Elf EV.

Also called the N Series in other markets like the Philippines, the zero-emissions truck is part of the brand’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future. In addition, the Elf EV truck highlights Isuzu’s technical prowess beyond diesel engines.

We first saw the all-electric version of the seventh-generation model when Isuzu revealed it in Japan in 2023. It was developed under the concept of “Isuzu Modular Architecture and Component Standard” (IMACS) which is meant for medium and big trucks in various configurations, particularly those with the Center Drive System EV in mind.

For the variant shown in Thailand, Isuzu brought the 100 kWh version which packs a total of five lithium-ion batteries. This powers a rear electric motor that puts out 204 PS and 370 Nm of torque. No exact range figures were revealed although Isuzu did share that the wide-body cab version with five batteries is capable of hauling up to 7.5 tons of gross vehicle weight (GVW).

The electric powertrain of the Elf EV comes with regenerative braking which can recharge the battery while on the go. However, it also comes with a ChadeMo charging system as standard. In the future, Isuzu plans to prepare optimal charging standards based on which country the vehicle will operate. In fact, Isuzu is already busy developing a CCS2 charger for the European market.

Size-wise, the Elf EV measures 6098mm long, 1995mm wide, 2214mm tall, and has a 3395mm wheelbase. It also has a dry weight of 3.2 tons and is equipped with the latest intelligent driver aids for extra peace of mind while on the road.

With Isuzu proving that it can make heavy-duty workhorses that can run on electric power, the company’s vision for a carbon-neutral future is inching closer to reality. Perhaps the only question now is, could we see the EV and FCEV Elf trucks arrive in the Philippines any time soon?
