Will Toyota's next-generation pickup be called Hilux Travo?

The eighth-generation Toyota Hilux has been with us for nearly a decade. First debuting in May 2015, the midsize pickup truck has gone through several facelifts and updates, along with new and upgraded technologies. With the platform already nearing ten years old, it might not be long before Toyota reveals the next-generation midsize pickup truck.

Just recently, Toyota filed a trademark for what could be the next-generation Hilux. But unlike the current model which goes by the name of Hilux Revo, the all-new pickup will reportedly carry the “Hilux Travo” name. This comes from a service registration that was filed by Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki Kaisha (AKA Toyota Motor Corporation) with Thailand's Department of Intellectual Property (DIP).

With the pickup truck supposedly set to get a new name, this somehow indicates the all-new Hilux could debut later this year in Thailand. No exact details or specifications are available as of this writing. However, we could expect the all-new Hilux to get a complete redesign both inside and out. Meanwhile, the body-on-frame platform could get significant changes to improve its on-road manners, deliver better hauling capability, and perhaps have the ability to carry electrified powertrains.

When it comes to powertrain options, the next-gen Hilux could get improved versions of the GD turbo-diesel lineup. In addition, the mild-hybrid diesel version might also get an update while an all-electric version could officially be offered in the not-so-distant future. Remember, the Hilux Revo BEV concept already made its presence felt during the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show – highlighting Toyota's plan to make it a reality.
