Toyota to reveal 3rd gen FC system at H2 & FC Expo in Tokyo

Toyota continues to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology as an alternative to achieving carbon neutrality. And this time, the Japanese auto giant is set to reveal its latest innovation to the public.

Japan is hosting an International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Expo in Tokyo, and it’s where Toyota will unveil its 3rd-generation Fuel Cell system.

Toyota says the new system features significant improvements in performance, efficiency, and cost reduction compared to the prior version. The Japanese auto giant also claims the 3rd-generation system is designed to have the same durability as conventional diesel-powered vehicles when it comes to the needs of the commercial sector.

While hydrogen fuel cell technology adoption is moving slower than battery electrics and hybrids, Toyota’s fuel cell systems has seen use in buses, railroads, and stationary power generators to more than 100 customers globally. Its fuel cell electric vehicle, the Mirai, has already racked up 28,000 unit sales to more than 30 countries since it was launched in 2014.

In addition to passenger vehicles, the 3rd Gen FC System will be expanded for use in heavy-duty commercial vehicles, and is planned for introduction in markets mainly in Japan, Europe, North America, and China after 2026 at the earliest.

The 2025 H2 & FC Expo will take place at Tokyo Big Sight in Japan from February 19 to 21.
