2026 Frontlander is the refreshed Corolla Cross made by Toyota-GAC for China
The Toyota Corolla Cross has been in the Philippine market since 2020 and was launched as a 2021 model-year vehicle. Then in 2024, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) revealed the refreshed Corolla Cross. Not only is the crossover now available only as a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), but it also gets some neat changes on the exterior and interior, along with improved safety technologies.
It’s still in its first generation and is likely due for a full model change in the coming years. However, Toyota believes it can do with another update, particularly in the highly competitive Chinese car market. But depending on which Chinese brand Toyota has partnered with, the hybrid compact crossover is available either as the Corolla Cross by Toyota-FAW, or as the Toyota Frontlander, which is manufactured by Toyota-GAC. Think of it like the Toyota Yaris L Sedan and the Toyota Vios Hatch, which were made by Toyota-GAC and Toyota-FAW, respectively, nearly a decade ago.

This is the 2026 Toyota Frontlander, and despite having a different name, it’s the same vehicle, albeit made by a different Toyota partner for the PRC. But whereas the Corolla Cross adopts the global-spec facelift, the Toyota Frontlander gets its own new set of changes for the 2026 model year. For starters, it gets a more dynamic-looking front fascia with a split grille design. It also gets a different front bumper that gives the crossover a more modern appearance.
Higher-grade models come with redesigned LED headlights, although lower trim variants get the carried-over design from the pre-facelift version. Also worth mentioning are the new alloy wheel designs and the restyled LED taillights with updated graphics, which complete the exterior makeover of the electrified crossover.

Open the doors, and Toyota-GAC was busy giving the Frontlander/Corolla Cross a more high-tech yet minimalist cabin. The center console and dashboard are almost devoid of any physical buttons, while a new high-resolution 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display sits proudly on the center dashboard. Slimmer aircon vents are also present, which add to the crossover’s sleeker interior.
Other key changes present in the 2026 Frontlander/Corolla Cross include LED ambient lighting, a pair of wireless charging pads, a redesigned center console with an updated gear selector, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, and revamped front seats.

Under the hood, the Chinese-spec Toyota Frontlander/Corolla Cross comes with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that’s available in non-hybrid and hybrid flavors. The former generates 171 PS and is paired with a CVT, while the latter puts out 158 PS and is assisted by an electric motor that produces an additional 112 PS and is powered by a lithium ternary battery pack.

With the 2026 Toyota Frontlander/Corolla Cross already available in China, we’re curious if Toyota plans to give the electrified crossover another facelift for other markets like the Philippines. Alternatively, the automaker might already be working on releasing the next-generation Corolla Cross in the coming years. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that Toyota releases either of the two very soon.
