Inverted converts the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 into an EV

We've already seen several examples of classic cars being converted into electric vehicles (EVs). From Aston Martins to Jaguars, as well as classic Range Rovers, some owners are opting to convert their vintage rides into zero-emissions vehicles to curb emission laws or do away with expensive maintenance costs.

Now, another classic vehicle has been given the EV treatment. Inverted, a UK-based company that specializes in turning classic Range Rovers into EVs has revealed a new project involving the revered Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. That's right, the classic 4x4 had its internal combustion engine replaced with an electric motor. But did the conversion mean this FJ40 has lost its 4x4 credentials?

Let's start with the electrical hardware which is comprised of a single electric motor that's integrated into the traditional gearbox. It makes a respectable 218 PS with a generous 339 Nm of torque. It is then paired with a 53 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which gives it a range of up to 241 km and is rated to handle up to 75 kW of fast charging. This allows the SUV to recharge from 20% to 80% in just 25 minutes.

Prefer something with more oomph? The FJ40 EV can also be specified with a Tesla-sourced powertrain. This one comes with a pair of electric motors that crank out a combined 324 PS with 420 Nm of torque. This one, however, eliminates the traditional gearbox and selectable 4WD system in favor of AWD.

4x4 enthusiasts need not worry about this FJ40's ability to go off-road as Inverted has given it a proper 4WD system. According to the company, they retained the original transmission which allowed the FJ40 to start in any gear with varying levels of torque. Perhaps what Inverted did can be likened to how Tamiya EV motors work which will allow drivers to set how much torque the motor makes.

Aside from having a 4WD system, the FJ40 EV also comes with locking differentials, a lifted suspension, upgraded front disc brakes, an uprated suspension courtesy of Old Man Emu or Terrain Tamer, and a power winch for extra peace of mind. As for the body and chassis, Inverted claims that both sections of the vehicle are stripped to bare metal and meticulously restored to meet modern safety standards. There's also the option of having the FJ40 EV in different body styles including a soft-top version with a fabric roof.

No pictures of the interior were provided although Inverted said that it will come with modern amenities and features while keeping the classic look of the FJ40. These include modern Recaro seats, a digital rearview mirror, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, USB charging ports, a reverse camera, and high-quality leather seats.

Looking to get your own electric Land Cruiser FJ40? Hope you have deep pockets as the starting price of getting one (without any taxes yet) is at a cool GBP 195,000 or around PHP 14.088 million.
