Report: Mazda already working on a prototype next-gen MX-5

All-new Mazda MX-5 could benefit from electric assist

Believe it or not, the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 (codenamed ND) has been with us for over a decade. Launched by Mazda Philippines back in 2015, the roadster has already undergone several updates, with the latest version now codenamed ND3.

From getting a more powerful 2.0L SkyActiv engine to suspension modifications, as well as special edition models and unique color finishes, the MX-5 ND continues to be a staple for enthusiasts and fans.

But not everything can last forever, and the current MX-5 needs a full model change. Luckily for fans, Mazda is reportedly busy developing the next-generation roadster.

According to a report by Dutch publication AutoRAI, Jo Stenuit, Mazda Design Director in Europe, shared that a new MX-5 is coming. In fact, a prototype is already being tested for the next-generation MX-5. But don't expect a reveal anytime soon.

“The Mazda MX-5 is, of course, the core of our company. Without the MX-5, Mazda would look completely different. So, of course, we're working on it,” said Stenuit.

As to what powertrain the all-new roadster will get, the executive said that he's in favor of still using a gasoline engine. However, Stenuit did say that it could get something entirely different, but it still has to be lightweight, fun, and affordable.

“The powertrain the car will have isn't set in stone. Personally, I love a gasoline engine, but I can also imagine driving through the woods with an MX-5 and not having any engine noise when driving with the top down. The MX-5 stands above all for fun, lightweight, and affordability. If any of those three aspects are missing, it's not an MX-5. Other brands have already tried to build an electric roadster, but that's a completely different story. Aspects like fun, light weight, and affordability also depend heavily on the powertrain,” added Stenuit.

The design director also added that the MX-5 might get some form of electric assistance. But since the vehicle is still being developed, there could be changes in the long run.

“The ND generation is already twelve years old, and it's still a perfect car. So, how do you improve it? That's difficult. We did a project in 2024 where we explored the possibilities for the MX-5 NE. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I'm certain that car will be released and that it will have some form of electric power assistance. Mild hybrid will be the least of the options. As I said: the MX-5 is the soul of the company. As you know, they're a bit crazy in Hiroshima, so something interesting will surely come out of that. But that will take a few more years,” shared Stenuit.

For now, Mazda Motor Corporation remains tight-lipped about an all-new MX-5. But based on a previous report, the next-generation MX-5 could be revealed in 2027 with a bigger 2.5L SkyActiv Z engine to pass stricter emission laws.
