Porsche upgrades Carrera GT with new Michelin tires, titanium suspension
After more than 20 years, Porsche gives its V10 sports car handling upgrades
It's been over 20 years since Porsche unleashed the Carrera GT. With a 5.7L naturally-aspirated V10 pushing out 612 PS with 590 Nm of torque and mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the two-seater Targa can sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and reach a hair-raising 330 km/h top speed.
Despite having one heck of a performance pedigree under its belt, the Carrera GT can use some improvements, especially when it comes to its tires. Luckily, Porsche, in collaboration with Michelin, has developed new ultra-high-performance tires for the V10-powered sports car – the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2. Aside from that, Porsche also developed new titanium suspension components to replace the original parts – addressing a suspension issue that prompted an upgrade a year before.
Joerg Bergmeister, a Porsche development driver and brand ambassador, was instrumental in testing the new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Bergmeister noted significant improvements in handling and feedback, particularly during spirited driving. Unlike before, the new tire design of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 features advanced rubber compounds and construction techniques – further optimizing performance across various conditions.
As for the suspension upgrade, it was a necessity that arose from issues related to the spherical joints in the double wishbone suspension system. With that, Porsche has developed a solution that includes fitting new titanium suspension components. The result is a more durable setup that also significantly improves the vehicle's performance and handling.
The cost of these new titanium components is substantial. However, Porsche is going above and beyond typical upgrade measures. All Carrera GTs returned to dealerships for the suspension fix will receive a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. This is particularly beneficial for owners who may still have their cars fitted with original tires, which can pose safety risks.
