End of the line for the ICE 718

Many carmakers have already pulled back on their EV plans to develop hybrids, but Porsche seems to still believe full electric is the way to go.

The writing was on the wall when Porsche called the Spyder RS the last 718 with an internal combustion engine. Now it’s been confirmed – 2025 will be the final year for the ICE versions of the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman.

That is what Porsche production manager Albrecht Reimold said in an interview with Automobilwoche. The combustion-engined 718s have been in production since 2016. And while the mid-engined Porsche twins are still selling well globally, Reimold says it is time to open up space in Porsche’s lineup to introduce their electric successors.

Speaking of which, Reimold says the electric 718s will still be as fun as their combustion engine counterparts. If it’s anything close to the Cayman GT4 ePerformance, then maybe it’s just the sound that we’ll miss the most with the ICE versions.

Together with the 718, the gas-powered Macan SUV will also be facing the chopping block by 2026. The latter’s EV successor is already out, but the gas version is still being sold outside Europe.
