Deal with competitor ends Diaz’s Free Fuel for Life, says Phoenix
As the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate, countries like the Philippines, which rely heavily on imported oil from the region, are beginning to feel the strain. With motorists bracing for higher fuel prices and the ripple effect these will have on transportation and other fuel-dependent sectors, some Filipinos have jokingly wished they were in the same position as Hidilyn Diaz.
After winning the country’s first Olympic gold medal, she was awarded “Free Fuel for Life” by Phoenix Petroleum, seemingly shielding her from future fuel price hikes.
However, renewed attention on the award recently sparked controversy after her manager allegedly said the offer was merely a “drawing” on the part of Phoenix Petroleum, suggesting the promised lifetime fuel benefit was never actually delivered.

Today, Phoenix Petroleum issued a statement saying that Hidilyn Diaz had violated the terms of the award several years ago after engaging with a competing fuel company. As a result, the company said the “Free Fuel for Life” benefit was terminated.
According to Phoenix Petroleum, Diaz received her second year of fuel donation in 2022 but declined to share it online as part of the company’s marketing campaign, saying she was already engaged with another fuel brand.
“We fulfilled our commitments. As with many corporate donations, such arrangements are guided by conditions, including brand alignment. As circumstances changed and Ms. Diaz engaged with another fuel brand, the fuel donation arrangement could no longer continue under the same terms,” said Phoenix Petroleum.

Phoenix also said that the support it extended was given in good faith, but claimed the company was being unfairly vilified. It also expressed disappointment that the issue was raised publicly by the manager of Hidilyn Diaz before any direct communication or clarification with the company, adding that the matter could have been resolved privately and amicably had they reached out first.
The company added that it remains proud of the role it played in supporting Filipino athletes during an important stage of their journey. It also said its respect for Hidilyn Diaz and all Filipino athletes remains steadfast, adding that it stands with Filipinos as they endure the current economic challenges.
