MMDA opens Quezon City 'Kalayaan Lanes' for private motorists

Quezon City will make its roads available to private motorists in order to help in alleviating heavy traffic congestion on EDSA and Metro Manila.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Quezon City local government for the opening of the ‘Kalayaan Lanes’ that will become alternate routes to EDSA.

"We are very thankful to the Quezon City LGU (local government unit) for extending their support to ease traffic. We are asking the public to use these alternate routes for their own convenience,” said MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim.

As per the MOA, these roads will be made part of the ‘Kalayaan Lanes’ for private vehicles:

‘Kalayaan Lanes’ are roads under the jurisdiction of Quezon City that have been specified by the MMDA and manned by their traffic personnel. The LGU, Land Transportation Office (LTO), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Philippine National Police (PNP) and the MMDA will be tasked with the implementation such as clearing obstructions and illegally parked vehicles.

Barangay peacekeeping security officers (BPSO), traffic enforcers from the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS), and traffic aides will also be deployed in order to assist in managing traffic and the implementation of ordinances.

Signages will be installed to guide private motorists.
