68 enforcers fired from LTO head office, thanks to netizens

Social media now plays a crucial role in unmasking entrenched corruption within government institutions, with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) among those under intense public scrutiny. Because of this, the agency has axed 68 enforcers from its Central Office in Quezon City, following mounting complaints of corruption, many of which were aired on social media by motorists and concerned citizens.

LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, confirmed the dismissals, saying the move reflects the agency’s commitment to weeding out bribery, extortion, and misconduct within its enforcement ranks. The LTO Chief stressed that reports from netizens played a critical role in uncovering these abuses, proving how social media has become a tool for accountability in public service.

“This is also as part of our efforts to weed out corruption and to professionalize LTO’s enforcement team… Enough is enough. I will not allow any abuses and wrongdoings to compromise our positive gains from the hard work and sacrifices of our LTO family,” said Mendoza.

Mendoza also added that the agency consolidated complaints gathered from online platforms, motorists, and mystery agents deployed to test its frontline personnel. The findings revealed patterns of abuse that undermined public trust in the agency tasked with enforcing traffic laws.

The renewed crackdown comes as the LTO pushes wider reforms, including wiping out an 11-year backlog of license plates and expanding online services for driver’s license renewal and plate delivery.

Mendoza also vowed that he will take a hands-on role in the hiring process of new personnel for the LTO Law Enforcement Service. He said that only applicants who demonstrate both competence and a strong commitment to integrity and hard work will be considered.

“Only those who successfully pass the interview and are proven suitable for the job will be accepted. This is part of our continuing effort to gain the trust and confidence of the people we serve. We are on the right path and I will make sure, with the help of the men and women of the LTO family, that we shall prevail,” he added.
