MPV no more: Mitsubishi reveals all-new Grandis as rebadged Renault
The all-new Mitsubishi Grandis returns as a badge engineered Renault Symbioz
After releasing a teaser image of its latest crossover, Mitsubishi has officially brought back the Grandis name from a long hiatus. But instead of resurrecting it as an MPV as before, the Japanese automaker has transformed it into a stylish (and electrified) crossover.
Say hello to the 2026 Mitsubishi Grandis, and yes, it's now a compact crossover SUV. Just like the latest ASX, the Grandis is now based on a Renault, particularly the Symbioz. The all-new Renault-based Grandis gets a flashier and more dynamic appearance along with electrified engines under the hood.
Starting with its design, the 2026 Grandis shares the same exterior look as the Symbioz. However, Mitsubishi applied some key design changes like a different grille that features the brand's Dynamic Shield, a restyled front bumper, and slightly altered LED daytime running lights. The 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels have been carried over from the Renault, but Mitsubishi gave the Grandis a new set of LED taillights to help the crossover stand out more, along with a cleaner-looking tailgate.
Hop inside and the all-new Grandis gets the same Renault cabin as the Symbioz. Apart from the Mitsubishi badge on the steering wheel, everything appears to have been carried over from the French vehicle. There's a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with built-in Google, including Google Assistant. It also comes with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto as standard, as well as a Mitsubishi Motors app that serves to help owners find their car, remote control certain functions, and have their smartphones work as a digital key.
When it comes to safety features, the Grandis is available with several Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These include: automatic high beam, driver attention warning, an around-view monitor, blind-spot warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, forward collision mitigation system, emergency lane assist, park assist, rear-cross traffic alert, and rear automatic emergency braking.
Under the hood, the 2026 Grandis is available with two electrified powertrains. First is a mild-hybrid (MHEV) 1.3L turbocharged engine that can be mated either to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and makes a decent 140 PS. Next is the 1.8L Hybrid (HEV) that gets a helping hand from a pair of electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery pack. It has a combined system output of 156 PS and is paired with a multi-mode transmission.
While this means the Grandis MPV is no more, it's nice to see that Mitsubishi was able to resurrect a familiar nameplate. It may now be a Renault-based vehicle, but overall, we like what the Japanese automaker was able to do for the all-new Grandis. Unfortunately, it will only be sold in Europe and will be made at Renault's Valladolid plant in Spain.
