Mitsubishi is bringing back its iconic SUV

The iconic SUV that made its name as the “King of the Desert” is making its most-awaited return.

According to NHK Japan, Mitsubishi Motors is preparing to bring back one of its most iconic nameplates – the Pajero. The automaker is planning to reintroduce its flagship SUV by December 2026 as part of its efforts to boost sales in its home market.

The all-new Pajero will reportedly be produced in Thailand before being imported into Japan. If confirmed, this marks the return of Mitsubishi’s iconic SUV that first debuted in 1982, and played a major role in popularizing four-wheel-drive vehicles not only in Japan but also in global markets.

Mitsubishi discontinued Pajero sales in Japan in 2019 in the fourth-generation model, as shrinking domestic demand and the company’s financial struggles occurred at the time. Likewise, the SUV’s dedicated production plant was shut down in 2021 and was converted into a toilet paper plant. Back then, it was seemingly the nail in the coffin for the Pajero nameplate.

But now that Mitsubishi has renewed its focus on SUVs and off-road models through the return of Ralliart and its participation in AXCR, Mitsubishi is banking on the Pajero’s strong brand heritage and name recall to win back customers. A few months ago, spy photographers spotted a large body-on-frame Mitsubishi SUV clad in camouflage, which suggests it could be the all-new Pajero.

Its return, however, comes at a challenging time for the global auto industry. Automakers, including Mitsubishi, are navigating tougher market conditions, with high US tariffs on automobiles adding further pressure.

If launched as planned, the Pajero’s comeback could serve as a turning point for Mitsubishi, but it’s easier said than done. Reviving one of its most storied models comes with huge shoes to fill for the all-new version, but here’s to hoping Mitsubishi gets it right.
