Portion of Gil Fernando Ave will be closed on March 2 for Car-Free Sunday

Heads up to motorists living in Marikina City. A portion of the Gil Fernando Avenue will be closed to vehicles this coming Sunday. This comes after the city government announced they will be launching the Marikina Together: Car-Free Sundays program on March 2, 2025.

This will mark the first time the city will hold its own Car-Free Sunday program. It will be similar to what Makati City is doing along Ayala Avenue and what Quezon City is holding along Tomas Morato Avenue. Just like the other cities, Marikina's Car-Free Sunday will run from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and will cover a portion of Gil Fernando Avenue.

According to the city government, the road closure will span from Gil Fernando cor. Guerilla Street (Xeland Marikina) to Comedor Restaurant near Good Friend Bridge. There will be traffic rerouting during the Car-Free Sunday program near the area although the city government has yet to release details about it.

There is no word yet if the said program will become permanent although since March 2 will be the first day, perhaps they will observe and see if it's feasible as a permanent fixture every Sunday.

For motorists living near Gil Fernando Avenue at Xeland Marikina, don't be surprised to see a lack of cars on March 2, 2025.
