Baguio mayor appeals to tourist to flock the city now

The US-led conflict in the Middle East is hitting Filipinos where it hurts most, which is at the fuel pump. With fuel prices more than doubling since the crisis began, naturally, travel plans will have to be pushed back.

To put it in perspective, a family of four driving from Manila to Baguio in a diesel SUV will have to spend close to PHP 10,000 on fuel for a round trip alone, and that’s before tolls, hotels, meals, and other expenses even come into play.

Magalong: Now is the best time to visit Baguio image

That said, Baguio City is already feeling the squeeze and has declared a State of Calamity as visitor numbers slump during what should be its peak tourist season. The City Mayor, Benjamin Magalong, has urged travelers to take advantage of the low tourist traffic: now is the best time to visit Baguio.

“Now is the right time for you to come up to the city of Baguio dahil expect na talagang maluwag ang trapiko natin,” said Magalong, stressing that the decline in visitor numbers has eased traffic conditions across the city.

Drawn by its cool climate, scenic views, and vibrant culture, Baguio City typically sees a surge of tourists that leads to congested streets and packed attractions. This time, however, the drop in arrivals has brought smoother traffic and shorter queues across key destinations.

Magalong expressed hope that more visitors would take the opportunity to rediscover the city’s charm in a calmer, more comfortable setting. Local businesses, especially those in tourism and services, stand to gain if more travelers take advantage of the lighter crowds.

City officials also assured the public that Baguio remains ready to welcome guests, with measures in place to ensure safety, cleanliness, and an overall pleasant experience.

While driving up to Baguio City has become a very expensive trip for those coming from Metro Manila and other areas, there are still more affordable ways to enjoy the city’s cool breeze and take advantage of the lighter crowds.

Bus fares from Cubao to Baguio City can go for less than PHP 700 per person, one way. For those craving a bigger challenge, especially cycling enthusiasts, this could be the perfect time to tick off that bucket list ride of conquering the climb to Baguio and back.
