Isuzu’s new 2.2 turbodiesel is called Maxforce

Earlier in the year, Isuzu was spotted in Thailand testing a mild hybrid version of the D-Max. Back then, it was reportedly fitted with a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine assisted by a 48V system.

Fast forward to November, and it looks like Isuzu is ready to roll out the new turbo diesel engine for both the D-Max and the mu-X. Isuzu Thailand has released an official teaser video of the new engine called the Ddi Maxforce, and has already opened registrations for test drives in the Land of Smiles.

Isuzu did not reveal much in the teaser, but reports say the new 2.2-liter turbodiesel is based on the 1.9-liter RZ4E engine. The cylinder capacity was increased, along with a new turbocharger. While power figures are yet to be disclosed, Isuzu says we should expect the new turbo diesel to be stronger and more powerful.

What’s also worth noting is that Isuzu did not mention anything in the teaser about the 2.2-liter powerplant being a mild hybrid. It’s still unknown if the 2.2-liter mill will replace the RZ4E and particularly, the 3.0-liter 4JJ3-TCX which is a crowd favorite in the drag diesel scene with its ability to make big power.

Either way, we’ll know the answers pretty soon. Watch this space.
