DPWH says Magallanes Flyover will remain open to light vehicles amid repair works
Motorists who frequently take the Magallanes Flyover along EDSA may be surprised to see some repair work being done on the infrastructure starting next week.
The Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) recently announced that they will begin rehabilitation works on the said flyover around next week. In a radio interview with Radyo5, DPWH-NCR Director Loreta Malaluan shared they are awaiting permits from the concerned barangay for the installation of scaffolding on the lower section of the flyover since the rehab works will start at its foundation.
Malaluan added that they will not yet begin repair works on the road itself as they will first install carbon fiber sheets on the lower portion of the said flyover.
“Ang una nating sisimulan ay paglalagay ng carbon fiber sheets and plates sa ilalim. Kaya hindi po tayo agad magsasara sa ibabaw o sa mismong flyover,” said Malaluan.
[We will start with the installation of carbon fiber sheets and plates at the lower portion so we will not immediately implement road closures on the flyover]
The DPWH-NCR Director added that during the rehabilitation works itself, a U-turn slot below the flyover may be affected by the repair works. However, she assured motorists that the U-turn slot would not be closed to traffic although there might be some congestion.
As to when the DPWH will begin rehabilitation works on the flyover's road itself, they said that they will only begin once the repairs on the EDSA-Kamuning Flyover in Quezon City is done. But unlike the EDSA-Kamuning Flyover where motorists are not allowed to pass through, Malaluan said that light vehicles will be allowed to pass while repair works are ongoing.
“Papalitan ang expansion joints lalo na dito sa southbound, yung nasa gitna na expansion joints. Ang isasara po natin, ‘yung dalawang lane sa gitna. Pero ang outer lanes nila, hindi natin isasara,” added Malaluan.
[We will replace the expansion joints, especially at the southbound lane, those at the center. We will close the two center lanes but the outer lanes will remain open]
The repair works on the Magallanes Flyover are expected to be finished in 9 months. With that, motorists are advised of some possible congestion both on the flyover itself and below it.
