Ford recalls certain previous-gen Mustangs over self-steering wheels

Several 2022-2023 MY Mustangs have steering wheels that could turn by themselves

UPDATE as of 7/8/2024 - Ford Philippines has reached out to us and confirmed that there are affected Mustangs in the country. Ford will notify owners and will instruct them to take theie vehicle to a dealer for service.

Owners of the previous generation Ford Mustang may want to check if their pony car is part of a recall. This comes after the Blue Oval announced they are recalling 30,735 Mustangs due to a faulty power steering control module (PSCM) software.

According to the automaker, they need to update the PSCM software to prevent the steering wheel from turning left and right by itself. The issue is caused by a secondary digital torque sensor in the steering gear that was calibrated with an inverted polarity.

Should an affected Mustang’s primary steering torque sensor fail, the steering wheel could start swinging forwards and backward as it applies steering assistance the driver wasn’t asking for. This can result in unintended steering which may cause loss of steering control - increasing the risks of a crash. Fortunately, Ford says that no accidents have happened yet as a result of the PSCM software problem.

To fix the issue, Ford says it will require customers to bring their affected pony cars to a local dealership. There, the Mustang will have its PSCM software updated free of charge.

So far, Ford announced that some 2022 - 2023 model year Mustangs built between September 2022 and April 2023 are part of the said recall.

We have already reached out to Ford Philippines and asked if there are any local units affected by the PSCM software issue. We’ll make an update as soon as we get word from the automaker with regards to any local units that need to visit a dealership.
