After a 10 year production run, Toyota to show ninth generation Hilux pick-up
Seeing concept cars and visions of future automobiles and all kinds of personal mobility devices at a motor/mobility show is nice, and Toyota certainly gave us an all-you-can-eat buffet at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. There was so much happening there that we may as well call it the Toyota Mobility Show, as they had a whole pavilion to themselves.
To be honest with you, as interesting as concepts are, we are far more excited about cars we can drive now or very soon. That’s why we all gravitated towards the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ and even the facelifted RAV4 to an extent. It’s a matter of relevance to our readers and viewers and to us as enthusiasts and journalists.
That’s also why we are so excited when Toyota dropped a proper teaser video for the new generation Hilux.
Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT) just released the first official video showcasing some details of the next-generation Hilux that they will be revealing on November 10. As you know, Thailand is the manufacturing base for the Hilux, and it is the king over there after reclaiming the title of best-selling truck in 2024 from the Isuzu D-Max.
Based on the short 15-second video, the new Hilux will have TOYOTA on the front, much sharper headlights with pointy DRLs, projector lamps (based on previous spy images), a hexagonal front grille, wraparound taillights on the deck with C-clamp lights, 7-spoke wheels (presumably for the high-grade variant), and a rather bulbous hood.
There has been a lot of talk regarding Toyota moving towards hybrid technology for the Hilux, particularly a 48V mild hybrid that is currently in use in other markets with the 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine. We would rather wait for official figures and confirmation, though we did speak to Toyota’s powertrains head, and he did echo the same: to help reduce emissions, they are looking at a combination of an enhanced exhaust system with some form of electrification.
There was no indication on the short video regarding specs like the suspension and features, but we do expect enhancements all around. There have been spy shots of a new Tacoma-inspired interior dashboard panel for the Hilux, but better to wait for what will become of it.
Regarding size, we expect that, given that 10 years have passed since the current generation was launched, the Hilux will very likely get bigger in all respects. Currently, when compared to many of its rivals, the Hilux is easily one of the smallest in the category. It would be very logical for Toyota to make it more spacious and enhance the capacity in all respects because, after all, it is a truck meant to carry loads.
Let’s wait and see what the Hilux will offer when it is revealed on the 10th of November.
