Classic Toyota Corolla coupe transforms into an AWD off-road runner

The Awdrola's ultimate goal is joining the Baja 1000

When grip is everything, this build proves that any car can become an all-wheel-drive beast.

Just as AWD Civics make use of CR-V and Element drivetrains for extra grip, tuners are transforming all kinds of cars into off-road traction monsters. Randy Wimenta of KC HiLiTES pushed the concept even further, transforming his 1989 Toyota Corolla GT-S (AE92) into a radical creation he calls the “Awdrola” (pronounced “odd-rola”).

Inspired by ’80s rally cars and the viral Pandemic AE86 Bug Out concept, the build combined a Corolla coupe body with the drivetrain of a 1989 Toyota Corolla All-Trac Wagon (AE95), a rebuilt 1.6-liter, 4AGE engine, and suspension components from a RAV4 that offer plenty of travel.

Designed for extreme off-road events like the Mint 400, this rally-inspired machine is equal parts creativity and engineering, proving a classic Corolla can do just about anything if properly built. 

The Awdrola’s true all-wheel-drive capability comes from the AE95’s 4AFE transfer case and transaxle, paired with a rebuilt 4AGE engine from the Corolla GT-S. Built in phases, the car evolved from a raw rally-ready racer into a refined, all-terrain machine.

Integrating the engine with Toyota’s All-Trac transaxle simply required a custom flywheel and clutch, showcasing how 1980s Toyota components and technology can still be transformed into a modern off-road powerhouse.

While it doesn’t match the full-blown, custom-built, tube-chassis, trophy trucks, the Awdrola is built for off-road and “Gambler” style racing. It features a custom roll cage, lifted chassis, body protection, and recovery gear just like any off-road racecar.

With help from a respected trophy truck builder, the custom suspension features dual-rate Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks, delivering 7–12 inches of travel for serious off-road capability. Traction is provided by BFGoodrich KO2 tires mounted on 16-inch Raceline wheels.

This feisty Corolla coupe may not outrun trophy trucks, but it commands attention with its clever engineering and undeniable capability.

It channels that classic Toyota Motorsports heritage through its iconic color scheme and striping, all while preserving the car’s original body lines, including the signature pop-up lights. Strong proof that ingenuity and identity can coexist in one unique off-road build.
