BYD taking on Japan at its own game

BYD believes they can make a vehicle for every mobility need there is. And in a country known for its kei cars, the Chinese auto giant wants to dip its toes in that segment.

At the upcoming 2025 Japan Mobility Show, BYD will be unveiling what they call a light duty battery EV prototype. But judging by its silhouette in the teaser photo, it has the makings of a fully electric kei car – one that’s not too different from the likes of the Nissan Sakura, the Honda N-Van, and the Mitsubishi Delica Mini.

The details about the kei car prototype are still very much scarce as of the moment. But as with other BYD new energy vehicles, the kei car will have their patented Blade battery and its related technologies. But the key here is that the model will be the very first BYD model made exclusively for an overseas market.

So far, BYD’s vast lineup of vehicles are all catered for either China-only or global automotive market consumption. The kei car prototype could show the next step for BYD’s interest in making specific cars for specific markets.

The Japan Mobility Show will begin on October 29, so stay tuned for updates as we cover the show next week.
